മനുഷ്യന്റെ അന്തർലീനമായ വികാരങ്ങളെയും ചിന്തകളെയും സ്വപ്നങ്ങളെയും ദൃശ്യഭാഷയിലൂടെ ആവിഷ്കരിക്കുന്ന അതുല്യ കലാരൂപമാണ് ചിത്രകല. തൂലികയും വർണങ്ങളും കൈമുതലാക്കി ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അനന്തവർണങ്ങൾ ക്യാൻവാസിൽ പകർത്തുന്നവനാണ് ചിത്രകാരൻ. സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രവും സംസ്കാരവും കാലത്തിന്റെ സ്പന്ദനങ്ങളും മനുഷ്യഹൃദയത്തിന്റെ നിശ്ശബ്ദമായ അനുഭൂതികളും രേഖകളുടെയും നിറങ്ങളുടെയും സൗന്ദര്യഭാഷയിൽ ആവിഷ്കരിക്കുന്ന ഈ തലമുറയിലെ ശ്രദ്ധേയരായ ചിത്രകാരന്മാരിൽ ഒരാളാണ് മോഹൻസ് കോതമംഗലം.

1960 ജനുവരി 21-ന് കോതമംഗലത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള വാരപ്പെട്ടിയിലാണ് മോഹൻസിന്റെ ജനനം. ബാല്യകാലം മുതൽ തന്നെ ചിത്രരചന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അവിഭാജ്യഘടകമായിരുന്നു. എൻ.എസ്.എസ്. ഹൈസ്കൂളിലെ പഠനകാലത്തുതന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചിത്രരചനാപാടവം അധ്യാപകരുടെ ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചുപറ്റി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കഴിവ് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ ചിത്രകലാധ്യാപകൻ മറ്റു വിദ്യാർഥികൾക്കായി ബോർഡിൽ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ വരയ്ക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ നിയോഗിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. പ്രീഡിഗ്രി പഠനകാലത്താണ് ചിത്രകലയെന്നത് വെറുമൊരു വിനോദമല്ല, ജീവിതത്തെ അർഥവത്താക്കുന്ന ഗൗരവമേറിയ സൃഷ്ടിപ്രവർത്തനമാണെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നത്. കോളജ് അധ്യാപകരുടെ പ്രോത്സാഹനവും പിന്തുണയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കലാസ്വപ്നങ്ങൾക്ക് കൂടുതൽ കരുത്തേകി.

പഠനകാലം പിന്നിട്ടതോടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ യാഥാർഥ്യങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തൊഴിൽലോകത്തേക്ക് കൈപിടിച്ചുനടത്തി. ലോറി പെയിന്റിങ്ങിലൂടെയായിരുന്നു തൊഴിൽജീവിതത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കം. നിറങ്ങളുടെ സ്വഭാവവും അവയുടെ അനന്തസാധ്യതകളും മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ആ അനുഭവം വലിയ പാഠശാലയായി. കൃത്യതയും കൈവഴക്കവും രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിൽ ആ തൊഴിൽ നിർണായക പങ്കുവഹിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് നാല് വർഷത്തോളം വിവിധ കലാകാരന്മാർക്കൊപ്പം പ്രവർത്തിച്ച് അനുഭവസമ്പത്തും കലാപരമായ പക്വതയും ആർജിച്ചു.

ഇരുപത്തൊന്നാം വയസ്സിൽ കോതമംഗലത്ത് ‘മോഹൻസ് ആർട്സ്’ എന്ന സ്ഥാപനം ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഫ്ലെക്സ് പരസ്യകലാരംഗത്തേക്ക് കടന്നുവരുന്നതിനു മുൻപേ ഇനാമൽ പെയിന്റിൽ ഷട്ടറുകളിലും ഭിത്തികളിലും ചിത്രങ്ങൾ വരച്ച് കൊമേഴ്സ്യൽ ആർട്ടുകൾ, ജ്വല്ലറി ഡിസൈനുകൾ, ടെക്സ്റ്റൈൽ ആർട്ട് വർക്കുകൾ തുടങ്ങി വിവിധ മേഖലകളിൽ സൃഷ്ടിപരമായ ഇടപെടലുകൾ നടത്തി. പതിമൂന്ന് വർഷത്തോളം സ്ഥാപനം വിജയകരമായി മുന്നേറി. പിന്നീട് പ്രവാസജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് കടന്ന അദ്ദേഹം പന്ത്രണ്ട് വർഷക്കാലം വിദേശത്ത് ചെലവഴിച്ചശേഷം നാട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയെത്തി.

തിരിച്ചുവരവിനുശേഷം കേരളത്തിനകത്തും പുറത്തുമായി നിരവധി ദേവാലയങ്ങളിലെ അൾത്താര വർക്കുകൾ നിർവഹിച്ചു. കോതമംഗലം മാർത്തോമ ചെറിയപള്ളി, മണ്ണാർക്കാട് പള്ളി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ വർക്കുകൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധേയ സൃഷ്ടികളിൽപ്പെടുന്നു. ചിത്രരചനയുടെ വിവിധ മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഓയിൽ പെയിന്റിങ്ങിനോടാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കൂടുതൽ ആഭിമുഖ്യം. വർണങ്ങളുടെ ആഴവും പ്രകാശ-നിഴൽ സങ്കേതങ്ങളുടെ സമൃദ്ധിയും ഏറ്റവും ഭംഗിയായി പ്രകടമാക്കാൻ ഓയിൽ പെയിന്റിന് കഴിയുമെന്ന വിശ്വാസമാണ് അതിന് പിന്നിൽ.

ചിത്രകലയുടെ ലോകത്തൊതുങ്ങിനിൽക്കാതെ കലാ-സാംസ്കാരിക രംഗത്തും അദ്ദേഹം സജീവ സാന്നിധ്യമാണ്. രണ്ട് നാടകങ്ങൾ രചിക്കുകയും സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യുകയും അതിൽ അഭിനയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. കഴിഞ്ഞ പതിനഞ്ച് വർഷമായി കോതമംഗലം കേന്ദ്രമായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ‘ബോധി’ കലാ സാംസ്‌കാരിക സംഘടന സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സംസ്ഥാന പ്രൊഫഷണൽ നാടകമത്സരത്തിലെ വിജയിക്ക് ഒരു ചിത്രം സമ്മാനമായി നൽകി വരുന്നതിലൂടെ കലാസ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു മുഖവും അദ്ദേഹം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

‘ശ്വാസം’ എന്ന ഹ്രസ്വചിത്രം സ്വന്തമായി രചിച്ച് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യുകയും അതിൽ അഭിനയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചിത്രരചനയുടെ തിരക്കുകൾക്കിടയിലും പുതിയ സൃഷ്ടികളുടെ അന്വേഷണത്തിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. കോതമംഗലത്തെ ഓഫീസിൽ നിറങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ സമയം ചെലവഴിക്കുന്ന ഈ കലാകാരൻ ഇപ്പോൾ പുതിയൊരു ഹ്രസ്വചിത്രത്തിന്റെ രചനാപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിലാണ്.

വർണങ്ങളെ വെറും ദൃശ്യാനുഭവമെന്നതിലുപരി ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷയാക്കി മാറ്റിയ കലാകാരനാണ് മോഹൻസ് കോതമംഗലം.

 

Painting is a unique art form that expresses the innermost emotions, thoughts, and dreams of human beings through a visual language. An artist is one who captures the infinite colors of life on canvas using brushes and paints. Among the notable painters of this generation who portray the history and culture of society, the pulse of the times, and the silent emotions of the human heart through the aesthetic language of lines and colors is Mohans Kothamangalam.

Mohans was born on January 21, 1960, in Varappetty near Kothamangalam. From childhood itself, drawing and painting were an inseparable part of his life. During his studies at NSS High School, his artistic talent attracted the attention of his teachers. Recognizing his ability, the art teacher would assign him to draw illustrations on the blackboard for other students. It was during his pre-degree studies that he realized painting was not merely a pastime but a serious creative pursuit that gives meaning to life. The encouragement and support of his college teachers further strengthened his artistic aspirations.

After completing his studies, the realities of life led him into the working world. He began his career through lorry painting. That experience became a great learning ground for understanding the nature of colors and their endless possibilities. It played a crucial role in developing his precision and technical skill. He then spent four years working alongside various artists, gaining experience and artistic maturity.

At the age of twenty-one, he established “Mohans Arts” in Kothamangalam. Through this venture, he engaged creatively in various fields including commercial art, jewelry design, and textile artwork. The institution functioned successfully for thirteen years. Later, he entered expatriate life and spent twelve years abroad before returning to his homeland.

After his return, he carried out altar works in numerous churches both within and outside Kerala. His works at Kothamangalam Mar Thoma Cheriapally and Mannarkkad Church are among his notable creations. Although he works with various artistic mediums, he has a special affinity for oil painting. This preference stems from his belief that oil paints are best suited to express the depth of colors and the richness of light-and-shadow techniques.

Beyond the world of painting, he has also maintained an active presence in the cultural and artistic sphere. He has written, directed, and acted in two plays. For the past fifteen years, through the “Bodhi” arts and cultural organization based in Kothamangalam, he has been presenting a painting as a prize to the winner of its State Professional Drama Competition, revealing yet another facet of his love for the arts.

He also wrote, directed, and acted in the short film *Shwasam* (“Breath”). Even amid the demands of painting, he continues to seek new creative endeavors. This artist, who spends his time among colors in his office at Kothamangalam, is currently engaged in writing a new short film.

Mohans Kothamangalam is an artist who transformed colors from mere visual experiences into the very language of life.
